Tribute will be paid to legendary motorsport figure John Surtees, who passed away earlier in the year, at the Oulton Park Gold Cup on August Bank Holiday Monday 28 August, with a special demonstration run at lunchtime from Mike Whittaker in an ex-Team Surtees Lola T70 Spyder MkII.
Surtees, who remains the only individual to have been world champion on both two wheels and four, won the Oulton Park Gold Cup four times during his illustrious career. ‘Il Grande John’ was even the first person to win the Gold Cup as a historic event, when he claimed the last of his four victories behind the wheel of a Maserati 250F, as Stirling Moss had done during the first two Gold Cup races in the 1950s.
John’s career and achievements will be celebrated on the Monday with an on-track display from the T70, an iconic reminder of Team Surtees’ foray into Can-Am sports car racing. It was behind the wheel of an eponymously-entered T70 that Surtees won the first ever Can-Am title, fending off competition from cars entered by Penske and McLaren.
In addition to the on-track commemoration, Surtees will also be remembered by long time Oulton Park commentator Mike Cookson within the pages of the souvenir event programme. You can pick up one of these informative little booklets for just £5 on the day – well worth it to find out a little more about the event.
On-track action will be headlined by the Historic Formula 2 International Series, and its expected at the time of writing that there will be at least one car from the Surtees stable on the grid.
