The spirit of the original Oulton Park Gold Cup will be revived from next weekend (27-29 August) with the creation of the ‘Historic Gold Cup’, which will be awarded to the aggregate winner of the weekend’s two Historic Grand Prix Car Association (HGPCA) races. The new trophy will celebrate both the Gold Cup’s past as one of the greatest non-championship F1 fixtures of the ‘60s and its modern day incarnation as the North West’s premier motor racing nostalgia weekend.
during which it was awarded to the winner of a non-championship F1 race no fewer than eight times. Winners during this period included Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, and Jacky Ickx, in races which also frequently featured drivers such as Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, Chris Amon, and Derek Bell.
This exciting era of F1 racing is faithfully recreated by the HGPCA with a grid which is likely to star many cars from manufacturers such as Lotus, Cooper and Brabham. These pre-slicks-and-wings machines are a real throwback to one of motor racing’s most exciting periods, and the cars will look magnificent at a venue which remains just as picturesque as it did in period.
The HGPCA headlines a fantastic programme of classic motor racing across all three days of the August Bank Holiday, with a race on both Sunday and Monday with the Historic Gold Cup set to be awarded following the latter contest.
The podium is located within the paddock, which is open all weekend to allow spectators to take a closer look at the cars, and you can see the Historic Gold Cup awarded there on Monday afternoon.
Other weekend highlights will include the Derek Bell Trophy which is open to a mixed bag of powerful single-seaters, including thunderous Formula 5000 cars which contested the Gold Cup in the 1970s and Super Touring Cars which clashed for the main prize twice in the ‘90s – it’s likely that John Cleland and Patrick Watts, who raced in the British Touring Car Championship during that period will compete.
Plus, there will be a host of other races for GT and sports cars, a variety of single-seater classes, and an outing for the crowd-pleasing Historic Touring Cars.
There will be plenty of action away from the racing too, including market stalls, retro live music, classic car display, vintage bus rides, children’s entertainment and much more.
