1970 Le Mans 24 Hours-winner Richard Attwood will race at the Oulton Park Gold Cup this weekend (26-28 August), contesting Sunday’s 70s Road Sports race behind the wheel of a Porsche 928.
77-year-old Attwood, who won the French endurance classic behind the wheel of a Porsche 917, has contested selected rounds of the championship this year as part of Porsche Cars GB’s 928 40th anniversary celebrations.
Attwood has enjoyed an interesting season so far, kicking things off with a podium finish at Silverstone in May, before later going on to race at Cadwell Park for the first time in his career.
A wealth of former British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) drivers are set to appear as well, including Steve Soper and his period rival John Cleland. Soper will race a Rover Vitesse in Sunday’s Historic Touring Car Challenge race, as he did in 1983 when he was briefly BTCC champion before being excluded, whilst Cleland will race all-weekend-long in his Super Touring Vauxhall Vectra.
Sam Tordoff is another familiar BTCC name on the entry list, and he will be in action in both of Monday’s Historic Touring Car Championship races, driving a classic Mini.
Another driver to look out for will Dave Coyne who won the Formula Ford Festival in 1990 and was briefly mooted as a driver for the Pacific Grand Prix team in the early ‘90s before fading back into obscurity. Coyne has always been a quick driver though, and you can see him in action in a Ford Sierra RS500 on Sunday.
