Oulton Park’s signature Gold Cup returns on Bank Holiday Weekend (27-29 August) with three days of retro motor racing action on the full International circuit. From its woodland surrounds, to its lakeside undulations and the iconic Lodge gates, the Cheshire circuit’s picturesque vistas offer an unbeatable backdrop for historic motor racing.
This year’s edition will be headlined by the Historic Grand Prix Car Association which returns pre-slicks-and-wings F1 machines from the era of Jim Clark and Jack Brabham to the venue, 50 years on from the latter’s remarkable 1966 season in which he won the Gold Cup and the F1 World Championship in a car bearing his own name. The Lotus and Cooper marques with which Clark and Brabham are so closely associated are expected to be well represented on a grid which will recall the Gold Cup races of the ‘60s.
Other highlights will include a celebration of the Gold Cup’s more recent history with the Super Touring Cars which contested the main prize in-period during the early ‘90s. These manufacturer-built saloon cars were renowned for close racing when they were new, and with former British Touring Car Championship stalwarts Patrick Watts and John Cleland expected to feature, there should be plenty more excitement from them this year.
Additionally, there will be plenty of other races including the Derek Bell Trophy contests for raucous V8 Formula 5000 cars of the 1970s and the crowd-pleasing Historic Touring Cars of the 1960s. Plus, there will be countless other races for GTs, sports cars, and single-seaters.
There will be lots to see from the racing too, from historic car demonstrations to an artisan market, and live music. The Gold Cup’s trademark massive car displays will appear too, with other star attractions including a spitfire and WWII military display.
