Event starts in...

Friday, December 3, 2021

The 2022 event will retain the signature event's traditional three-day event format, with practice and qualifying on the Friday ahead of two showcase race days. The Gold Cup is a long-established highlight fixture on the Cheshire circuit's calendar, dating back to 1954 when it was first run as a non-championship Formula 1 race, and the superb race line-up next year will reflect its almost seven-decade heritage.

Highlights will include specially selected offerings from the Historic Sports Car Club's (HSCC) portfolio, such as the Historic Formula 2 Championship and Historic Formula Junior, whilst the Guards Trophy and all-new Griffiths Haig Trophy will bring retro sports cars to the event.

Next year's updated line-up will also feature a stunning collection of pre-66 Grand Prix cars, courtesy of the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association, plus several new additions. Two grids from Masters Historic Racing, namely the Masters Pre-'66 Touring Cars and Masters Gentleman Drivers, will contribute retro saloon and GT machinery respectively, whilst the HRDC Jack Sears Trophy will celebrate the earliest years of tin top racing.

Elsewhere, outrageous modified saloon and sports cars driven in the spirit of the great Gerry Marshall will compete in the Classic Sports Car Club's Special Saloons and Modsports category. The meeting will also welcome the Vintage Sports-Car Club for the first time, with two grids of cars from an even earlier era of the sport's history.

Further details of which class will compete for the 'Historic Gold Cup' and other special commemorative trophies will be shared in due course.

Here's the Historic Gold Cup race line-up so far*, with more yet to be confirmed:

  • •    Historic Grand Prix Cars Association (pre-1961 front-engine and pre-1966 rear engine Grand Prix cars)
    •    Historic Formula 2 (single seater racing cars built to Formula 2, Formula B and Formula Atlantic regulations between 1967 and 1978)
    •    Guards Trophy GT and Sports Racing Championship (Pre '66 GT cars and Pre '66 sports-racing cars)
    •    Historic Formula Junior (from 1958 to 1963 Formula Junior replaced the motorcycle engine 500cc F3 cars as the stepping-stone to Formula 1)
    •    Griffiths Haig Trophy (for 50s drum brake sports and sports-racing cars)
    •    Masters Gentlemen Drivers (mini-endurance races for pre-1966 GT cars)
    •    Masters Pre-66 Touring Cars (Touring car racing as it used to be, 60s style)
    •    HRDC 'Jack Sears Trophy' (for 1958 - 1966 Touring Cars)
    •    CSCC Special Saloons & Modsports (featuring wild machines that were so popular in the 1970s through to the early 1990s)
    •    Vintage Motor Racing  - the VSCC (Vintage Sports Car-Club) will bring two grids of their most popular groups of cars

The Gold Cup is much more than a race event and this will not change despite the new date. Car displays will continue to form a key part of the show, with a wide range of car clubs and groups from across the North West in attendance, whilst there will also be a significant number of off-circuit activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained.

*Please note this line-up is provisional and remains subject to change
